Body sculpting is a term that can refer to a variety of non-surgical fat reduction procedures, namely cold, hot, ultrasound, and radiofrequency treatments.
These procedures vary in the exact methods they use to target destroy fat, but the general concept is the same. They all kill fat in a non-invasive way and allow your body to flush out the dead fat cells naturally.
Does Body Sculpting Work? All Your Questions Answered
Body sculpting is becoming a popular alternative to liposuction because it doesn’t require any surgery and there is no long recovery period, as there is with lipo. But, does body sculpting really work? The short answer is yes, it does!
In this article we’ll dive into the topic to answer all your questions about how effective this holistic approach to fat removal really is, with a focus on cool body sculpting treatments (our specialty!)
How Does Body Sculpting Work?
All body sculpting treatments work in a similar way. They target specific fat deposits and break down the fat cells, which then get flushed out gradually by your body’s lymphatic system.
Types of Body Sculpting:
- Cold treatments (CoolSculpting)
- Heat treatments
- Radiofrequency treatments
- Ultrasound treatments
The type of body sculpting that we use is called CoolSculpting. These treatments employ freezing temperatures to target and destroy stubborn fat cells. In other words, we freeze the fat to death! The scientific name for this process is cryolipolysis.
In order to destroy fat using this method, we use a special machine equipped with a suction vacuum that we apply to specific fatty areas. Once the suction cup is securely attached to an area, the machine blasts it with temperatures as low as -11 degrees Fahrenheit.
When the fat cells underneath your skin and tissue are exposed to these freezing temperatures, they actually crystallize and die off permanently. Your body then flushes the dead cells out naturally (in your urine) over the next few months.
Cryolipolysis can be used on most areas of the body, including your chin, arms, back, abdomen, love handles, and thighs.
Other types of body sculpting treatments work in a similar way to cold treatments, but use a different applicator machine and a different form of energy to target and destroy the unwanted fat cells.
For instance, heat sculpting machines clip around a fatty area and fire pulses of lasers deep through your tissue to damage the structure of the fat cells. Because of the type of applicator machine that heat treatments use, they work best for the abdomen and thighs.
The same goes for other body sculpting treatments — the methods of application aren’t as versatile as CoolSculpting. In fact, ultrasound sculpting machines are flat and are only designed to be used on the abdomen.
Factors That Influence Body Sculpting Results
Body sculpting treatments are proven to work and there are plenty of body sculpting before and after pictures to prove it. However, there are a number of factors that can influence the effectiveness of the procedures. These include:
- Your body mass index
- Amount of fat you want to remove
- Which area you’re treating
- Number of sessions you do
Generally, body sculpting treatments work best for people with a normal body mass index (BMI), which is from 18.5 to 24.9.
These procedures are not designed for extremely overweight individuals. They are meant to target specific unwanted fat deposits that are hard to get rid of with a balanced diet and exercise.
So, if you have some stubborn love handles or sagging upper arms, body sculpting can definitely help you get rid of them and tone up those problem areas. However, these treatments can’t get rid of huge amounts of fat all over the body, as surgical procedures like liposuction can.
Additionally, certain body sculpting treatments tend to work better on certain areas. For example, CoolSculpting can be very effective at eliminating fat in specific areas of the lower back, including love handles.
Finally, the number of sessions you attend naturally affects how noticeable the results you see are. We typically recommend attending two to four sessions, but many people see a change in their bodies after their first treatment.
It’s important to note that results vary from person to person, so what works for you might be different from what works for someone you know.
How Long Does It Take To See Results from Body Sculpting?
Depending on your unique case, you might notice a difference right away after attending your first body sculpting session. However, since it takes the body a while to flush out the dead fat cells, the full extent of the results can take from a few weeks to a few months to be evident.
An average patient can typically expect to see a 20 to 25 percent reduction in fat in the targeted area within three months.
Keep in mind that body sculpting is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle and should be combined with other weight loss methods, such as dieting and exercise, to keep the fat off.
Is Body Sculpting Safe?
Body sculpting treatments, including CoolSculpting, are FDA approved and completely non-invasive. Sculpting sessions are short and any discomfort you experience is minimal and goes away very quickly. This means body sculpting is safe and comfortable for most patients.
However, people with certain medical conditions may not be candidates for certain types of procedures. For example, if you have a vascular condition that makes you extremely sensitive to cold temperatures, like Raynaud’s syndrome, you should not use cold treatments.
